Intermediate school students visit

About thirty students from Glen Eden Intermediate visited the science department on wednesday. They did some experiments on chemicals found at home.

They tested to see whether they were acids or bases and noted the pH values.

They worked really hard and are welcome to return for another visit later this year. Well done guys.

The Arataki visitor’s centre experience…..another Biology field trip

Year 12 biology had a great day at Arataki Visitor Centre last week, collecting data for their internal assessment. The rangers gave some interesting (and entertaining) talks and demonstrations before students put their drawing skills to the test in the afternoon. All learnt a few more tree names and discovered the intricacies of the forest and the damage caused by introduced pest species

Year 11 Physics. Aircraft design.

A Boeing 767 is travelling at 80 meters per second when it takes off.

(1) What is the speed of the aircraft in kilometers per hour

(2) How long does it take for the aircraft to reach its take off speed from the start (when it is stationary).Time to the point the aircraft just begins to lift off the runway

(3) Use this time to calculate the acceleration of the aircraft as it moves down the runway.

The equation you need is a = (change in speed)/change in time

(4) Calculate the total thrust needed to produce this acceleration by using the equation:

F=ma

The aircraft weighs approximately 200,000Kg when it is fully laden. Remember to use the correct units in your answer.

(5) The shape of the aircraft wing changes as it approaches cloud level. Why is the wing designed to behave in this way.

(6) What airport do you think the aircraft is taking off from, why?

Many games are driven by physics engines that mimic motion in the real world in a virtual counterpart. Phun discussed earlier is a simple 2D example. A number of classes had a brief look at the technology behind the Nintendo Wii and the physics concepts underpinning the games. The boxing game will have to be banned in future as students let loose in a virtual world were determined to punch each others’ lights out risking a virtual school suspension
