Alkenes are produced in large volumes by “cracking” alkanes. This is a process by which long carbon chain alkanes are broken down into smaller molecules.

The carbon carbon double bond in alkenes is very reactive and its presence in a hydrocarbon can be detected using either bromine water or acidified potassium permanganate solution.
